This is a beautiful museum, with stunning architecture, housing so many different exhibits (not just art). Of course, we went to see the Mona Lisa, only to be faced with an insanely long queue, but there was a passage at the side which you could walk down, bringing you within a few metres, avoiding the crowd. Not the full-on view, but definitely good enough. And who stole Venus de Milo's arms. We particularly liked the Egyptian and Roman relics. Spend the whole day!
This was a dream trip for us because the Louvre was actually manageable. My dream was to roam the grand gallery and not be in a mosh pit with others. The staff was really friendly and it was a dream visit. We were very fortunate that we did not have lots and lots of people to wade through. If there’s anything I can do to help it’s to plead with people to get the Paris Museum Pass. It’s so easy and you can skip most of the lines at most of the landmark sites in Paris. AND you can order your Paris Museum Pass(es) online and have them delivered before you go to Paris. Just make sure you go to the Official Paris Museum Pass site. There are a lot of other places to get them and I’m not sure if the increase the charge? We purchased the 144 hours which allowed us to have the pass for our entire trip. You don’t need to sign or activate the passes anymore which is great but we did have to schedule a separate time to get into the Louvre. This is new and doesn’t cost any money but it looks like they are trying to mitigate the crowds. If you have the museum pass you’ll need to go on the Louvre website and indicate that you have a pass. Please note that I could only get the site to work in French. Each time I tried to switch to English it would tell me that there was no times available. Stay in French and use Google translate to navigate the form. Try to look at the architecture and ceilings of the museum. There is great art in the architecture, not just the walls. Thanks to the Louvre staff for their help and assistance during our visit!
My best tip to visit this not to be missed museum: buy your ticket ahead for an early hour in the morning. The museum gets crowded quickly, the earlier you get the better. I would also suggest you to go straight to the cloakroom if you want to keep your coat and/or backpack in one of the not so many lockers and just after that to the Mona Lisa’s room if you wish to see the painting.
