Everyone knows that this is a massive hotel in a beautiful palace. It seems that now most people also know to avoid the pyramid entrance and go through the Carousel de Louvre shopping mall - so on arriving there, I found a long (20-30 minute) line even there! This is a life-changing experience that you shouldn't miss - especially if you want to experience the evolution of art through history. You can walk into the Italian art collection and move from the 13th century to all stages of the Renaissance (with a few Da Vinci's, Raphael's etc) and to groundbreaking artists like Carvaggio and the massive Wedding Feast by Veronese (opposite the Mona Lisa). Then you should visit the French art section and see how French art (pre-impressionism) evolved with Delacroix and others. There are amazing sculptures and ancient art as well, of course. Then you can finish off your whirlwind tour with a visit to the opulent apartments of Napoleon III. Just have a plan (this is the one I followed) and use the map - I ended up walking back-and-forth a bit as not everything is perfectly clear or laid out. Rather than leaving for lunch I did grab a bite at one of the stands/cafes inside the security zone.
Loved every minute of it. Wandered around for 3 hours and was full of things to see. Please don’t focus on seeing the obvious spots. They are always over crowded and there a lot of amazing things to see outside of that. I bought a ticket online, make sure you do that to avoid queue’s. I went at 12.15 and got in between 5-10 minutes. Head straight to the ticket office and get a audio guide ticket. Then head in!
The Louvre is beautiful inside and out but with huge crowds it can be a bit overwhelming. I went in at opening which wasn’t as busy but got crowded quickly. Recommend getting an audio guide as majority of the descriptions are in French so if you don’t speak French they are very useful. Audio guides are hard to use at first but get easier, they also have maps to direct you to specific areas when required. Overall great day spent four hours wandering and enjoying the art and history - really enjoyed Egyptian section.
