The Louvre is so huge that I encourage you to buy the audio guide and do the recommended tours that take you on different walks throughout. We did the highlights walk which showed us everything we wanted and then we spent another hour wandering freely and checking out other personal items of interest. Also if you have the museum pass it takes no time to get in so it is totally worth it!
The Louvre is a museum unlike anything I have seen. It definitely is a must see and do in Paris even if you are not the museum type. We bought advanced tickets so a) we could pay in US dollars and b) we could pre-pick a date and time that we wanted to go. We printed the tickets out before we left for the trip. The tickets do allow you to be a few minutes late (maybe 30?) before you can no longer use the line for pre-bought tickets. We stayed off the Champs Elysee, so we approached the Louvre through the gardens. It was a beautiful summer day (one of the few on our trip). We had tickets for a Tuesday at 10:00 AM. We arrived right around 10 and there was no line to enter for the pre-bought tickets. It is a little confusing as there are multiple lines happening so definitely check with a museum worker to figure out which one to get in. The other thing is there are multiple entrances as well. We went in under the pyramids, but you can enter from other ways. If you do not buy your tickets in advance, you will definitely want to try and enter from another way as there tends to be less crowds than right out front. However, I would strongly recommend buying in advance, especially since this is a non-weather dependent activity.
This place disconnects you from present. I found the Egyptian, Italian, and islamic sections VERY interesting and unique, just try to be there the earliest you can, the lines get TOO long starting 10. there is a very good paul branch inside the museum so you can have your breakfast there.
