One thing I want to share, which I wish someone told me before my visit, is that if you are the type that wants to pause and spend at least a few seconds to look at each and every piece and read the descriptions - 1 day visit is probably too tough. Knowing now how big it is and how much there is to see, I'd split it into a 2 day visit.
I have to admit that I was overwhelmed by this enormous museum when I first visited in the early 80's. Fortunately, a lifetime of art studies and knowing what I wanted to see and not see made this trip easier. Still, we spend 4 hours just seeing the things that mattered to us - an capped it off in a lovely museum café with a view out onto the Tuileries Gardens.
It is best to just dedicate one day for the museum because there is a lot to see. I really enjoyed my time here
