If you have even the slightest appreciation for history and beauty, this place is a must. Ancient egyptian mummies? greek artifacts? Louis IX's chair and sceptre? The sheer breadth of items contained in this museum is awesome. You could spend hours just on the paintings alone! Wow...we bought a skip-the-line tour but did not do the audio-guide.
If you’re in Paris, and love art, please spare a day and see this beautiful museum. Be prepared to walk a LOT. Better if you book tickets in advance from their offices website. Their audioguide is great too!
My daughters (18 & 23) were not looking forward to mom dragging them around another museum. BUT I had downloaded the Rick Steves highlights tour & promised them it would be only 2 hours of their day. They agreed. The tour is easy to follow and we ended up spending another 2 hours because THEY wanted to. There is so much to explore. My youngest daughter was in a wheelchair for the day (AS) and the Louvre was surprisingly easier to navigate than we had thought. There were several lifts and as long as you knew the letter of the lift you had gotten off you coul deasily find your way back. I am going to be that one odd person that says they were impressed by the Mona Lisa. After all the "don't expect much" and "it's so small" reviews I guess my expectations were pretty low. I actually found her to be beautiful & charming. It wasn't very crowded so we had a lovely view for as long as we wanted. We stopped at the café for a snack & some wine & just watched people for a bit. Always amazing to me when people drag little kids to such a art laden museum. There is little for them to do, no interactive exhibits really. I'd like to return someday with an audio guide and hours to spend.
